MEWA steps up efforts in fight against desert locusts

The Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture has successfully detected and controlled desert locusts in an area of about 117 954 ha in the regions of Riyadh, Qassim, Eastern Region, Hail, Al-Jouf and the Northern Borders during the period from April 1-15.

The ministry said that the control teams were able to survey 9,9954 ha, treat about 18,000 ha, and survey approximately 315 points in those regions.

Based on the FAO's latest report concerning the desert locust, the situation will continue very worrying for the coming months in East Africa, eastern Yemen and southern Iran. Also, the widespread rains that fell in late March are expected to cause locust numbers to increase significantly and hopper groups to form, and to allow the new swarms to mostly stay in place, mature and lay eggs.
