MEWA Suspends Romaine Lettuce Imports from the United States

The Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture has temporarily suspended the imports of Romaine lettuce from the United States following a warning from Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to avoid consuming "Romaine lettuce", after E. coli outbreak which infected 32 people in North America.

Dr. Abdullah Abalkhail, spokesman for the Ministry, said that the Ministry has temporarily suspended the importation of the Romaine lettuce, to protect the public health, until the completion of the government agencies investigations. Adding that the Ministry has coordinated with the Ministry of Municipal and Rural Affairs to withdraw the Romaine lettuce products from the markets and destroy them.

Abalkhail has warned, as a precaution, consumers and restaurants to not consume this kind of lettuce and advised them to dispose of all romaine lettuce they have already purchased.
