His Excellency the Minister of Environment, Water and Agriculture, and President of the 16th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD COP16), Eng. Abdulrahman Al-Fadley stressed that investing in rangelands is key to achieving environmental sustainability, land degradation neutrality, and improving the livelihoods of millions of herders worldwide. He highlighted that rangelands cover 54% of the Earth's surface and host ecosystems that contribute to ecological balance, providing food for animals, creating jobs for rural communities, and enhancing food security.
This came during the panel discussion titled Protecting and Restoring Rangelands. Also, Al-Fadley said rangelands are a key focus at this year's Conference of the Parties, emphasizing the importance of continuing discussions on this critical topic during the Kingdom's presidency of the 17th COP session in Mongolia. He added that rangeland degradation threatens one-sixth of the global food supply, which may result in reducing one-third's Earth carbon reservoir, and affects approximately two billion people living in rangeland areas worldwide.
The President of COP16 highlighted that the Kingdom has been an early investor in rangelands to promote sustainable development, ensure food security, and protect the environment, with rangelands covering 75% of its area. In line with Saudi Vision 2030, a national plan for rangeland rehabilitation has been established, featuring initiatives focused on restoring rangelands, ensuring the sustainability of natural resources, and employing innovative technologies for land management. The plan also includes projects to enhance agricultural practices and support local communities through training programs.
In closing his speech, Al-Fadley stressed the importance of supporting joint international action to protect and restore rangelands and achieve their sustainable development.
