Tree-planting campaigns launched in the Eastern Region, aiming to plant about 525 thousand trees during the first phase of the afforestation initiative during the current planting season.
MEWA pointed out that the first phase which starts from October until November aimes at planting about 34 thousand saplings, including 1000 in the water treatment plant in Dammam, 2000 in Fulaij valley in Hafr Al-Batin, 1000 in Olaya village and 30,000 in Al-Ahsa National Park.
MEWA affirmed further implementation of the afforestation campaigns which was launched after signing memorandums of understandings (MoUs) with several entities aimed at planting about 491 thousand saplings, including 123 thousand in Dhahran and 118 thousand in Abqaiq, under a MoU signed with Saudi Aramco.150,000 saplings are being planted in Dammam and its suburbs this season, in cooperation with Eastern Province Municipality, and another 50,000 in Al-Ahsa, in cooperation with Al-Ahsa Municipality, in addition to 40 thousand in Hafr Al-Batin, in cooperation with Hafr Al-Batin Municipality, and 10,000 in Jubail, pursuant to the MoU signed with Royal Commission for Jubail and Yanbu.
MEWA said that the afforestation campaigns launched in the Eastern Province started in a cooperation with the National Water Company, Environment Friends Society, College of Technology at Dammam, green associations, scouts, students, volunteer teams and a group of those who are interested in the environment, pointing out that the types of trees being planted in the region are native species that are suitable for the local environment, such as Prosopis (Ghaf), Acacia (Talh), Ziziphus (Sidr), and Tamarix (Athel).
